The Staff

Jane Oehlsen, the director of the camp and the head riding instructor, has a background in formal education. She has a BA in Mathematics, and a California Teaching Credential. She also has a great deal of practical experience with horses. Her associations with 4-H, Pony Club, and the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) have taught her a lot about horses, horsemanship, and the teaching of horseback riding. She has received a Master Instructor's Certificate from the CHA.

Originally from Saratoga, California (near San Jose), Jane has been involved in horses and the horse business all of her life. Jane's mother taught riding lessons in Saratoga, and Jane helped out from the time she was 8 years old. When Jane became a mother, she began teaching riding lessons herself. Due to her short stature, she specialized (as did her mother) in teaching children on ponies. Her students began to grow up but didn't want to leave her riding program, so she started getting horses as well, and even began teaching her students' parents.

After 20 years of teaching at her parent's place, it was time for Jane to get a place of her own. Her search for a new location brought her to Oakdale. With her husband's endless help, Jane is reviving Shady Lawn Ranch as a thriving horse ranch. Many of her students make the two-hour drive from Saratoga to Oakdale for Jane's summer and weekend camps. Her local students are telling their friends to come take lessons at Shady Lawn Ranch.
